Project: why duration and finish date do not seem to match

Check calendars and scheduling before treating an unexpected duration as a program fault.

Sources reviewed · As of

What to check

  1. Inspect the project calendar, resource calendars and assigned task calendar. Nonworking time can explain a later finish than expected.
  2. Check dependencies, constraints and scheduling mode for the affected task. Do not rely only on the number in the Duration column.
  3. Test a single task in a copy of the project. Compare working times and calendar assignments, then deliberately apply relevant changes to the main plan.

Before the next step

To start, provide task duration, start and finish dates, and calendar names. Confidential project details do not need to be shared publicly.
