What to check
- Use ipconfig /all to read configured DNS servers and the DNS suffix. Document the settings before changing configuration.
- Use nslookup to query the affected fully qualified computer name against the intended DNS server. Record results and errors for the administrator.
- If multiple devices are affected, have DNS records and forwarding checked. If the full name works but the short name fails, include the DNS suffix in the investigation.
Before the next step
Keep the intended internal DNS in a domain until the administrator has narrowed down the cause. Make changes during a planned maintenance window.
